The 4th of July in Washington, D.C. has always been a great spectacle for the entire nation to admire. Want to join in on some of the festivities? Here are some great ideas to embrace your patriotism and get the most out of your Independence Day here at the nation’s capital.

Watch the Independence Day Parade

Celebrate America’s birthday with balloons, floats, military demonstration, and more in the heart of the city. Bring the whole family to Constitution Avenue - Between 8th Street and 17th Street – at 11:45AM to catch all the action!

Explore The National Archives

For a more traditional celebration, come out to the home of the original Declaration of Independence while enjoying free family activities around the Capital. There will be an official reading of our Declaration on the Archive steps to pay homage to our fight for independence.

Immerse Yourself in the Smithsonian Folklife Festival

This extravagant and culturally rich festival makes its debut on July 4th this year on the National Mall. Explore the many different traditions and festivities throughout the day as you get a taste of backgrounds not only from America but around the world. Festival hours run from 11:30AM to 6:00PM and don’t forget to stick around for their evening concerts!

Cool Off at the Capital Riverfront

Bring the whole family out to make a splash along the Anacostia River on this 4th of July. The Capital Riverfront area is stocked full of great dining as well as fun waterfront activities that the whole family can enjoy.

Traditional Fireworks Showing at George Washington’s Mount Vernon

Turn back the clock to experience the livelihood of this historic matinee at George Washington’s Estate. Take this short excursion out of the city to enjoy colonial-style ice cream, daytime fireworks shows, and immerse yourself in America’s rich history.
